    Machine vision robotic cells

Machine vision robotic cells

Machine vision robotic cells combine robot technology with 2D and 3D vision sensors and are mainly used in series production of complex, larger and/or assembled objects for automating quality inspection.

Solutions are designed to be adaptable and reusable, meaning clients can add additional parameters to be inspected and can adjust it to new product types. The building blocks of the machine vision robotic cells are standard components, which enable us to re-use it to perform the inspection of completely new parts. This generally requires only a smaller modification but benefits in the extended lifetime of the solution and hence lower TCO. Return on investment (ROI) is in general shorter in the case of universal robotic cells compared to dedicated devices. When adding several new product types, the ROI is even shorter.

The solutions are designed to perform inspections as fast as possible, while being highly accurate and providing repeatable measurements.

Robotic cells can perform inspections of a large number of parameters within one cycle, like surface inspection, color inspection, assembly check, 2D and/or 3D measurement, various code readings, etc. The solutions are used in the automotive industry for inspecting vehicle parts such as lamps and light lenses (head lamps, rare-combined lamps, tail light lenses, etc.), HVAC units, air intake modules, turbochargers, engine cooling modules and other engine parts, brakes and brake boosters, but can also be applied to other industries.

Solution design

  • Inline or offline
  • Inspection of: presence/absence check, correct assembly check, position measurement, 2D and 3D measurements, surface check, matrix code reading
  • Tolerances are in the range of 0.1mm with an MSA figure of about 7% (Repeatability & Reproducibility), Cpk factor of 3 or more, depending on the parameter
  • Robot: used for manipulations of the optical head (2D and 3D camera and light source)
  • Main optical principles: optical head with 2D camera sensor and 3D laser triangulation head, including custom made fully adjustable light source
  • Cycle time: depends on the number of parameters checked, generally around 20–50s
  • Software: advanced machine vision software with AI algorithms
  • Flexible application enables the operator to add additional control parameters if and when needed
  • DataMatrix code printer is enclosed and prints information about the quality test results
  • The data on the quality check results can be sent to data storage for future compliance proofing
  • Housing: Standalone cell

Application

  • Automated quality inspection of assembled products
  • Automated quality inspection of larger products
  • 2D and 3D measurements
  • Surface inspection
  • Porosity checks on machined blocks
  • Recommended for the inspection of head lamps, rare-combined lamps, front light lenses, tail light lenses, HVAC units, air intake modules, turbochargers, engine cooling modules and other engine parts, brakes, brake boosters, die casted and machined objects, etc.

Possible robot systems:

  • Industrial robots: KUKA, Yaskawa, ABB, Epson
  • Collaborative robots: UR

Benefits

Our fully automated solution ensures 100% quality inspections of the products. The human factor is excluded from the inspection, which means that the quality check is faster, more efficient and more reliable. Products with defects are excluded from the production process, this results in lower costs and a reduction in returns. Thanks to the control results, our customers are also able to optimize their production process and increase the quality of production.

Each project is a new challenge for us.
